A Dismal Swamp Rorschach Test, Just for Fun (timeless)

A Dismal Swamp Rorschach Test, Just for Fun (timeless)

We recently traveled the Dismal Swamp on two back-to-back grey days. Some may call a grey day quite dismal. But I was fascinated with reflections in the still waters, which only rippled after we passed. Mile after mile, I saw nothing but Rorschach images. Remember Rorschach inkblots? For a refresher: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rorschach_test

So I had some fun and rotated my images 90 degrees. And then cropped them to simulate Rorschach, or at least my memory of his inkblots. For me, this creative exercise has been quite intriguing. It has conjured up many memories, from elementary school art classes to recent educational sessions about design that I created for a favorite customer.

As you take a peek, remember that I did not alter the photos in any way other than rotating and cropping. And note that I’ve labeled them, just in case anyone wants to add a comment about what they see in the images. I hope you enjoy these inspirations from nature.

Up Close with the U.S. Coast Guard (Day 154)

The more time we spend on the water, the more we appreciate the services provided by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Like all prudent mariners, we monitor VHF channel 16 when on the water. Since beginning this sailbatical, we have heard many important announcements from the USCG. Whether alerting boaters to “hazards to navigation,” such… Continue Reading

Life on the Hook (Day 33)

Life on the Hook (Day 33)

To live on a boat is to experience, and appreciate, a myriad of contrasts. Naturally, we live and breathe the weather, which of course can span a wide range of differences within just a few hours or a few nautical miles. As described in previous posts, we can quickly move from a leisurely journey down… Continue Reading
